CLOSER’s ABC

Get to know the CLOSER project on childhood leukemia in a different way:  23 letters of the alphabet, 23 concepts to explain why it is so important that we all support medical research.

  • Advances

To increase our knowledge of pediatric leukemia and to harmonize the application of the advances achieved between Europe and Latin America are the main objectives of the CLOSER project.

  • Better Diagnostic

The constant search is essential to increase the survival rates of pediatric leukemia for both better diagnostic tools, and more effective and less aggressive treatments, for the well-being of patients.

  • Cooperation

Cooperation between different countries and the inclusion of all the people involved in pediatric leukemia, including patients and their families, is one of the basic principles of this research project.

  • No Doubts

We have no doubts: all children and teenagers have the right to access the best possible treatment and to enjoy the same opportunities for healing, taking into account their physical and emotional needs, without their origin or their socio-economic conditions being a condition for this.

  • Empathy

It is impossible not to feel empathy for a patient with infantile-juvenile leukemia. CLOSER wants society to feel the same empathy towards research because it is essential to treat the patients better and increase their chances of healing.

  • Family

The family is one of the fundamental pillars in the treatment process of children diagnosed with cancer. Due to the families' experience and learning, CLOSER includes them, represented by patient and research support organizations, among its researchers.

All children and adolescents have the right to access the best treatment and to enjoy equal opportunities for healing, regardless of their origin or socio-economic conditions

  • Globalization

CLOSER approaches its research from a global point of view, considering not only the scientific aspects, the amount of human and technological resources and current health policies, but also the economic particularities, cultural, social and geographical differences between countries.

  • Hematology

Hematology is the science that studies blood diseases, including leukemia. Pediatric hemato-oncologists treat pediatric leukemia and lymphoma. The particularities of childhood leukemia require specific research.

  • Innovation

CLOSER seeks creative and innovative solutions to real problems of patients and health professionals, in order to simplify current methodologies and improve patient prognosis.

  • Justice

Justice comes hand in hand with legislation that protects and arbitrates. CLOSER will collect useful data to influence health policy decisions in order to ensure the best possible treatments for all.

  • Kids

The KIDS (Kids and Families Impacting Disease Through Science) project integrates children and adolescents into scientific councils to participate in the processes of understanding, communicating and improving medical innovation methods that affect them. CLOSER aims to implement the KIDS Project in all participating hospitals.

  • Leukemia

Leukemia is the most frequent type of cancer in childhood. It is a rare disease that affects the bone marrow, altering the proper functioning in the reproduction of the cells that form the blood.

CLOSER seeks creative and innovative solutions to real problems of patients and health professionals in order to simplify current methodologies and improve patient prognosis.

  • Motivation

CLOSER's motivation is strong and unwavering, essential in a research team to overcome difficulties and not to neglect essential objectives.

  • Needs

Identifying common and differential needs between CLOSER countries and those specific to each sector involved in leukemia will allow the development of solutions.

  • Organizations

Where there is a real need that is not met, non-profit organizations come into play. Their work is essential in many countries to cover welfare gaps and provide emotional support and information to those affected. Within the CLOSER project they are the voice of families and patients.

  • Prevent

Leukemia cannot be prevented, but with a better diagnosis and a more personalized treatment complications can be foreseen, and long-term adverse effects can be avoided, both physically and emotionally.

  • Questions

If you are wondering who is behind this project and have some questions for them, you can check the Partners sections from this website.

  • Resilience

The resilience shown by families when faced with a diagnosis of childhood leukemia is a source of inspiration for all CLOSER partners. Following the example of families, they will adapt to adversity and overcome barriers together.

CLOSER's motivation is strong and unwavering, essential in a research team to overcome difficulties and not to neglect essential objectives

  • Synergy

The synergy generated through the joint work of the partners of the CLOSER project will enable existing knowledge on childhood leukemia to be enhanced.

  • Talent

Within the CLOSER project, different talents from different professions coexist and all contribute to the common objective.

  • Union

It is known that unity makes strength. CLOSER has this strength to match the management of leukemia in all countries, to empower families in their treatment and to involve civil society in their research.

  • Values

These are the main values of the CLOSER project: cooperation, knowledge, excellence, innovation, communication and passion.

  • Web
